Photographic copy of one of the five hundred rouble promissory notes which the British Mission had printed as emergency currency. Photographer: Teague-Jones, Reginald
- Scope & Content:
-
'The main responsibility for producing these notes fell upon myself. I ransacked the Askhabad bazaar to try to find suitable paper, but failed to find any with a water-mark. I had a copper plate made with the text I had composed. I put my Pathan orderlies on duty on the printing press during the whole time the notes were being printed. They brought the plate to my quarters and it was kept under my bed at night to ensure that no extra unauthorised copies of the notes were run off. Finally long hours were spent far into the night signing each individual copy, fifty thousand of them! The final appearance of the notes was far below Bank of England standards, but infinitely superior to the Askhabad local currency. See actual specimen overleaf!'
[Gelatin silver print (modern print), 172x119mm].
