Previous unidentified, the sitter has been identified by Iain Stewart (http://www.victoriacross.org.uk). Duncan Home eartned his VC during the blowing of the Kashmir Gate in Delhi in September 1857. He died the following month whilst laying a mine. Mr Stewart suggests that the VC and two campaign medals might have been painted on to the portrait at a later date.
