View looking along hillside towards monastery buildings, with villages houses in the foreground. Nevill visited Tawang in May 1914: 'On the 18th of May, Captain Kennedy and I left Jamiri, the chief village of the Kutsun Akas. We travelled by the left bank of the Tenga river as far as Rupa, the first Monba village which I had previously visited. From Rupa we struck due north up the Dikong stream over the Bombi La (9,650) into the valley of the Dirangchu. In this valley we visited the villages of Rahung, Kudum, Tembang, But and Konia. We travelled one day's march from Rahung by the right bank of the Dirangchu to Dirangdzong, the principal Monba village south of the Sela range. From Dirandzong we travelled by the trade route crossing the Sela to Tawang. At Tawang there is a large monastery containing 500 monks; it is built in a fine position on a gently sloping ridge. The monastery buildings are enclosed by a fortified wall. Below the monastery is the village of Tawang consisting of a collection of wooden huts. The inhabitants are largely composed of Tsona people who come here to escape the severe cold of Tsona during the winter months.'
