View looking along the grassy ridge towards the houses of the village of But, visited by Nevill and Kennedy in February 1914: 'The following day we visited the village of But, two hours' journey from Konia. This village is like the latter situated on a magnificent defensible position on a bluff rising almost sheer from the Dirang Chu. There are 20 houses. The conditions are exactly the same as at Konia. They are just as degraded and filthy. None spoke Tibetan. They apparently have no religion. They are never visited by the Tawang officials. They are entirely under the control of the Mijis. Round the village there are large flats of excellent land, little of which is at present cultivated....'
