From Erode: South Kanara. Just over the frontier of Coorg, Sullia is in the foothills of the Western ghats. The region is notorious for malaria; the Collector would not allow the Bakes to stay overnight in the Travellers Bungalow. In that notorious T. B. it was very quiet and Bake made several records there. Most people who came were Pariyahs, who had harvest- and agricultural songs. The devil dancers who sang for Bake in Karanth's school.
