Formally posed group, with striped rugs draped over the cast-iron wall behind to serve as a backdrop. The sitters are identified as follows: Major A. Taylor, Mrs Taylor, Colonel C. Hutchinson, Mrs Pollock, Major Pollock, Miss Taylor, Mr L. [Leslie Seymour] Saunders, Mrs Burnett, Emily Burnett (Mrs Black), Sir R. Montgomery (in centre [Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab]), Maggie Burnett (Mrs Lambert), Colonel G. Hutchinson. 'Standing behind Sir R. Montgomery is Capt. [?Alexander Samuel] Heyland ADC. Behind Mrs Burnett are Col. Denniss [and] Sir A. Laurence [Sir Alexander Lawrence]. Behind Maggie Burnett are Capt. [?George Alexander] Black and Capt. [?George Craster] Lambert'. A further note supplies the additional biographical details: 'Capt. Black married Emily Burnett, Capt. Lambert [married] Maggie Burnett, Sir A. Lawrence son of Sir Henry Lawrence married Miss Kennedy, niece of Lady J. Lawrence. He was killed by an accident in 1864 - his horse falling through a bridge on the road between Simla and Narkunda.'
