Mughal, c.1680.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.

The Sultan is confined within a cage upon a pillar above the emperor Timur and his court. Timur is seated on a throne raising a wine-cup, and his ministers kneel on either side. Two groups of courtiers are on the left and right of Bayazid’s cage, those on the right with three coffers and gold coins. Bayazid defecates upon one of the courtiers who has stepped from the left group.
Note: Bayazid I succeeded as Sultan of Turkey in AD1389. He was an aggressive and successful conqueror until 1402 when he marched against Timur who captured him and confined him in an iron cage. He died, soon after, in 1403.
