Shah Jahan (1628-57).
Mughal, c.1760.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed below: ‘The Emperor Shah Jehan’; in Persian: ‘shah jahan padshah’ (the emperor Shah Jahan); numbered 10 in Persian inventory note; on reverse: ‘tasvir-i shah jahan’ (a picture of Shah Jahan).
Gouache with gold; on an album page with two borders of gilt floral decoration.

A seal on the reverse has been obliterated (cf. J.2, 1 and J.67, 14).
The emperor, in late middle-age, dressed in an orange jama, stands facing right, holding a jewel in his left hand, his right hand resting on his ‘katar’. Flowers grow in the grassland at his feet; dark green background.
Note: Derived from a mid-seventeenth-century portrait of Shah Jahan. Two such seventeenth-century portraits of the emperor dressed in orange against a dark green background are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (I.M.14-1925 and 17-1925).
