Muhammad 'Adil Shah II (1627-57). Artist(s): Muhammad Khan (Bijapur, fl. c.1630-50)
- Scope & Content:
-
Muhammad ‘Adil Shah II (1627-57).
By Muhammad Khan, Bijapur, c.1640.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘tasvir-i tana shah’ (a picture of Tana Shah) - an incorrect identification of the portrait as Abu’l Hasan Qutb Shah or Tana Shah (1672-87).
Gouache with gold; oval, set within illumination from a 16th-century Bukhara manuscript; outer mauve gilt-sprinkled border.
76 by 55 mm; page 380 by 254 mm.
Losty (1986), 44.
Sultan Muhammad ‘Adil Shah II of Bijapur is shown head and shoulders facing right, holding ‘pan’ in his right hand and a leaf in the other, wearing a white and gold turban shot with crimson; blue background.
Note: The style compares closely with Add.Or.2770 and justifies a confident attribution to Muhammad Khan. Compare also with the portrait of Muhammad ‘Adil Shah II in the British Museum, 1937-4-10-04 (Barrett (1958), pl.9).
