Inscribed beneath: ‘Azim ush Shan’; numbered 16 in Persian inventory note; on reverse in Persian: ‘qaimat-i tasvir-i padshah zada ‘azim al-shan 20’ (the price of this picture of Prince Azim al-Shan is 20).
Gouache with gold; on an album page with blue and gilt-sprinkled borders.
202 by 109 mm; page 451 by 305 mm.
A square seal on the reverse has been erased.
The prince, facing right, stands in a flowery meadow, holding a ‘sarpesh’ in his left hand, and resting his right hand on the hilt of his sword. A radiant halo glows about his head and he is dressed in a pale yellow jama with brocade flowers, a red and gold turban, and decorated gold boots and ‘patka’. The sky is pale green with streaked and coloured clouds towards the top.
Note: ‘Azim al-Shan was one of the four sons of Bahadur Shah, and the father of Farrukh Siyyar. In 1704 Aurangzeb appointed him governor of Bengal where he made his capital at Patna, naming it Azimabad. He was killed in an elephant accident during the succession war of 1712.
