The emperor Aurangzeb enthroned.
By Khemanand, Mughal, c.1660.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed at bottom in Persian: ‘faqir-i haqir ‘amal-i khemanand’ (the work of the poor contemptible Khemanand); numbered 71 in Persian inventory note; on reverse priced in ‘raqam’: 30 rupees.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with coloured paper and gilt-sprinkled borders.

The emperor receives a courtier who stands before him holding a sword. A prince stands on the left of the throne, with a small circular canopy above. In the background is a hillside and trees on the horizon.
Note: The prince is probably A'zam Shah (1653-1707), the third son of Aurangzeb. Another portrait showing him in a durbar scene is in an American private collection (Marteau and Vever (1913), pl.20; Welch (1963), no.59; Welch (1977), pl.37; Beach (1978), no.67).
