Numbered 14 in Persian inventory note (written twice); inscribed on reverse: ‘qaimat-i tasvir-i shahzadah 20’ (the price of this picture of a prince is 20); an erased square seal.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with gilt-sprinkled blue border.
160 by 90 mm; page 452 by 310 mm.
The prince, facing right, is standing with his left hand resting on a short straight sword. He is finely dressed in a white jama with embroidered gold ‘patka,’ his turban set with jewellery; uncoloured background.
Falk and Archer identified the prince as Aurangzeb. See Losty and Roy 2012, pp. 155-156 for further information. Note: Cf. a portrait of Aurangzeb with the same facial features (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Cabinet des Estampes, OD 51, fol.8a; published Stchoukine (1929A) pl.LIII), and Add.Or.3853.
