Jahangir hunting lions.
Mughal, c.1780.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
‘Charba’; mounted by the Library on paper watermarked 1818.
210 by 160 mm; page 385 by 280 mm.
The emperor Jahangir is being attacked by a wounded lion which springs into the howdah of his elephant. The emperor kneels and raises his gun to strike the lion with the butt; an attendant crouches terrified in the howdah and the mahout cowers away.
Note: This frequently repeated subject derives from an incident recounted in the memoirs of Jahangir: ‘It happened to me once when I was prince that I had gone out in the Punjab to hunt tigers. A powerful tiger appeared out of the wood. I fired at him from the elephant, and the tiger in great fury rose and came on the elephant’s back, and I had not the time to put down my gun and seize my sword. Inverting the gun, I knelt, and with both hands struck him with the stock over the head and face so that he fell to the ground and died’ (Jahangir (1909-14), II, 207). Here the subject has been altered a little; the animal has no arrow in its side and the emperor carries no sword. Other versions of the incident are reproduced in Brown (1924), pl.XLIII, and Ashton (1950), pl.134.
