Inscribed beneath: ‘Dara Shekoh’; Persian inventory inscription on reverse almost entirely cut away.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with gilt-sprinkled blue border.
249 by 195 mm; page 393 by 267 mm.

Shah Jahan is dressed in white, holding a lance with both hands and riding on a piebald horse through grassland.
Note: The background was repainted at Lucknow in the late eighteenth century. The painting is another version of the equestrian portrait by Payag of Shah Jahan c. 1628 now in the Kevorkian Album in the Metropolitan Museum, New York
