Inscribed on the letter held by Sa‘adat Khan in Persian: ‘az faiz o karam o midvar ast’ (he is hopeful of bounty and kindness); above: ‘shabeh-i muhammad shah padshah’ (a likeness of emperor Muhammad Shah); and: ‘shabeh-i navab burhan al-mulk bahadur’ (a likeness of Nawab Burhan al-Mulk Bahadur); numbered 10 in Persian inventory note.
Gouache, the figures remaining as drawings with gold, the colour added probably in Oudh, c.1770-80; on an album leaf with inner gilt-decorated border.

Reverse: two ‘baits’ of an Arabic ‘qasidah’; signed by the calligrapher Abu’l-Baqa al-Musavi and dated AH1094/AD1683.
Muhammad Shah stands on a terrace with Nawab Burhan al-Mulk (Sa‘adat Khan), founder of the Oudh dynasty, the emperor holding a bow and arrow and the mouthpiece of a hookah borne by a youthful attendant. On the left, Sa‘adat Khan is holding a letter in his left hand and a ‘morchal’ over his right shoulder. There is a river on the far side of the terrace and a verdant landscape beyond.
