- Title:

An elderly Mughal nobleman
- Scope & Content:
-
An elderly Mughal nobleman.
Oudh, c.1770-80.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Numbered 16 in Persian inventory note.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with inner blue and outer gilt-sprinkled border.
186 by 94 mm; page 415 by 286 mm.
An elderly Mughal nobleman stands facing right leaning with both hands on a gold staff. He is dressed in white, with yellow boots. At his feet is a conventional pattern of pink flowers. The pale blue sky has coloured streaks.
Note: This drawing like many of the portraits from Johnson Album 4 (e.g. nos.9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 19, 21, 22, 24 and 27) seem to be Mughal drawings which have been entirely or almost entirely overpainted at Lucknow. In view of the fact that so little of the original Mughal work can be seen, they have all been given to Oudh at this period.
