Designs for a game entitled Ganj (Treasure).
Commissioned by Richard Johnson, Lucknow, c.1780-82.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed with numerous captions and identifications in Persian, and a legend written on either side of the board area.
Drawing; on paper; the board area ruled into squares.
Board area 505 by 510 mm; page 605 by 700 mm.
Around a central reservation labelled ‘ganj’ are three ranks of squares which are alternately blank and illustrated, the illustrations being of figures, buildings, animals, etc., each with a descriptive caption.
Note: The legend describes how ‘Ganj’ is played as a game for several people; dice are thrown, and moves made with counters of different colours, each beginning at the top right corner. Stakes are made and are placed in the centre square, thus representing the treasure. As the counters progress, there are prescribed advantages and penalties for arrival in certain squares.

Johnson 5 : The 23 leaves are the work of Lucknow artists, especially Sital Das, and were apparently prepared to Johnson's order.
