- Title:

An elephant parade for the Muharram festival
- Scope & Content:
-
A parade.
Lucknow, c.1780.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; on paper with applied margin of grey paper above and below.
328 by 595 mm; page 485 by 595 mm.
Reverse: a drawing of a youth’s head in European style, perhaps by one of the professional English artists who visited Lucknow.
Six elephants are on parade, swinging their trunks as they stand in array side by side; eight men approach from the right with an empty palanquin. The elephant at the extreme left bears a drummer and a cymbal-player, the other five with banner-bearers seated in the howdahs. The banners display gold finials in the form of a straight sword, two slightly flattened globes, the head of a leopard and a hand.
Note: This probably represents the regalia for the Muharram festival. The gold finials of the banners are comparable to those used by the Mughal emperor as seen in the procession depicted in Add.Or.888. For details of these insignia and their meanings, ‘see’ Hendley (1912), 77-79, and Hendley (1913), p111.
