A design for a game of ‘snakes and ladders’.
Commissioned by Richard Johnson, Lucknow, c.1780-82.

Each square is numbered and labelled with its attribute in Persian and Hindi.
Drawing with colours; on paper.
Board area 520 by 525 mm; page 655 by 675 mm.
The board is divided into squares of equal size, nine across and eight deep, making seventy-two in all. Each square is numbered and labelled with an attribute (‘eg’ heaven, grief, bad company and various sins and pleasures); five of the squares in the top row represent gods, and are provided with yellow arches. Between certain squares run ladders, snakes, and two scorpions; one square contains a sprig of flowers.
