Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with gilt-decorated inner borders and an outer margin with animals and flowers in colours and gold.
152 by 113 mm; page 415 by 290 mm.
Reverse: a saying of Bayazid (Abu Yazid al-Bistami) written in seven lines of diagonal ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy; 17th century.
Sultan Ibrahim Adham of Balkh is seated in meditation at the foot of a tree, visited by four angels who bring food in golden dishes. To the right in the mid-distance an older hermit sits outside his cave.
Note: A popular subject in eighteenth-century Mughal painting based upon the story of the ninth-century king of Balkh who surrendered his kingship for the life of a dervish. For a more elaborate rendering, ‘see’ Kuhnel (1922), pl.140.
