Yusuf in the slave market
- Scope & Content:
-
Yusuf in the slave market.
Mughal, c.1600-1605.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Numbered 40 in Persian inventory note.
Drawing with slight colour; on an album page with gilt-decorated blue border and gilt-sprinkled outer margin.
169 by 94 mm; page 412 by 290 mm.
Yusuf, about to be auctioned, stands on a plinth surrounded by a turmoil of people, some of them coming forward with dishes and bags containing their offerings. A narrow gateway stands in the foreground.
Note: Probably an illustration to Jami’s version of the story of Yusuf and Zulaikha (cf.. Johnson Album 56, no.19; Robinson (1976), no.209). The style of the drawing is close to the work of the artist Farrukh Chela in the Chester Beatty ‘Akbarnama’ (Arnold (1936), II, pl.15).
