A mulla with disciple and visitors
- Scope & Content:
-
A mulla with a disciple and visitors.
Mughal, c.1690.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed below in Persian: ‘‘amal-i rai fath chand’ (the work of Rai Fath Chand); numbered 63 in Persian inventory note.
Gouache with gold; the picture has been altered and additions made, probably at Lucknow in the 18th century; on an album leaf with outer border of animals and flowers in gold.
222 by 135 mm; page 390 by 268 mm.
Reverse: four lines of ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy by Abd al-Rahim ‘Anbarin Qalam; 17th century.
A mulla talks to a young prince who is visiting with a bearded nobleman. Buildings and a thatched hut are behind, a water-wheel on the left is driven by an ox with attendant, and a well is in the distance.
Note: It appears that the composition originally approximated more closely to a miniature in the British Museum, 1920-9-17-0297 (Wilkinson (1948), pl.9). The picture has been substantially altered, possibly by Fath Chand who is referred to in the Persian attribution (cf. J.50, 1, and Add.Or.485).
