Persian inventory note (not numbered); numbered 42 in top left corner of border.
Gouache with gold; on a finely decorated album leaf with two inner borders of gold flowers on red and blue paper, incorporating a ‘bait’ in calligraphic ‘nasta‘liq’ above and below, the outer border with flowering plants in colours and gold.
175 by 100 mm; page 405 by 268 mm.
Circular seal with the title ‘Padshah ‘Alamgir’ and the date AH1090/AD1679-80.
Reverse: two ‘baits’ of an Arabic ‘qasidah’ written in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy by Muhammad Husain, within borders of gold decoration and calligraphy; 17th century.
The mulla, facing right, stands in a field holding out his hands. He has a full white beard, a magenta turban with a gold band and a brown shawl over a grey habit. The green sky is streaked with coloured clouds towards the top.
Note: A very similar portrait of the same man, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Schulz (1914), Taf.189; Coomaraswamy (1930), pl.LXIII).
