Author presenting a volume to a prince
- Scope & Content:
-
An author presenting a volume to a prince.
Mughal, c.1595.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; an illustration from a manuscript with lines of text at top and bottom of the miniature obliterated with gold; on an album leaf with gold-decorated blue border and undecorated outer margin.
103 by 59 mm; page 415 by 291 mm.
Reverse: a ‘bait’ from an Arabic ‘qasidah’ written in ‘nasta'liq’ calligraphy, on a gold ground decorated with flowering plants at two corners; 17th century.
The prince is enthroned on a dais with courtiers and musicians in attendance. The canopies and carpets are illuminated in colours and gold.
Note: The text illustrated by this miniature is not identified, but the manuscript of origin was apparently of a similar nature to the ‘Divan’ of Shahi from which four miniatures are in private collections (Welch (1959), pl.4, figs 4 and 5; Welch (1963), nos.5A and 5B; Pinder-Wilson (1976), no.67; Falk (1979), no.14).
