Prince holding court and receiving gifts
- Scope & Content:
-
A prince holding court and receiving gifts.
Mughal, c.1590.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with gold and gilt sprinkled borders.
224 by 134 mm; page 417 by 286 mm.
Various courtiers bring a hawk, a covered dish, a volume and two cheetahs, while in their midst are two Portuguese Jesuit priests holding a book and a pair of spectacles.
Note: The picture is of slightly provincial quality and the likeness of the prince is therefore not very definite, but it could be intended as prince Daniyal (1572-c.1602), third son of Akbar. [The painting seems related stylistically to BL Or.6317, dated 1600 from Ahmedabad, It is more likely that this is a representation of the court of Prince Salim perhaps done at Allahabad].
