Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with gilt-sprinkled outer margin.
132 by 77 mm; page 410 by 285 mm.
Reverse: a quatrain written in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy by Sayyid ‘Ali al-Hasani (or al-Husaini); dated AH1063/AD1653. The calligrapher could be Aurangzeb’s librarian, Sayyid ‘Ali al-Husaini al-Tabrizi (Jawahir Raqm) who died in AH1094/AD1683. Other specimens are in the British Library, Add.23610, ff.10, 12, and Add.21928, f.6, and he is mentioned in Muhammad Bakhtavar Khan’s ‘Mirat al-‘Alam’ (Add.7657, Rieu (1879), 125).
