Prince entertaining a lady
- Scope & Content:
-
A prince entertaining a lady.
Deccan, c.1690.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Numbered 33 in Persian inventory note; on reverse: inscription repeated with the additional identification ‘Sri Raga.’
Tinted drawing with gold; on an album page with gilt-decorated borders and a gilt-sprinkled blue outer margin.
158 by 104 mm; page 370 by 255 mm.
A prince sits on a terrace beneath a canopy with his arm around a lady who is kneeling beside him, offering ‘pan’ in a box to two youthful singers who kneel before them; one has a ‘tambur.’ A girl servant is standing on the right with a ‘chauri.’
‘Note:’ Although the offering of a gift by the prince suggests that the subject may have been intended as ‘Pancham Ragini,’ the later identification as ‘Sri Raga’ is probably correct, in spite of the absence of the ‘kinnara’ musician normally present.
