A scene at a well, a girl offering water to a horseman
- Scope & Content:
-
Scene at a well.
Mughal, c.1750.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with fawn border and plain margin.
236 by 161 mm; page 378 by 248 mm.
Reverse: a quatrain in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy.
A girl offers water to a prince who has arrived at a well on horseback. Her companions are collecting pots of water from the well-head where a girl sits working a chain of pots with her hands and feet. An old woman drinks from the overflow on the left.
Note: This romantic illustration, popular in Mughal and Rajput painting, appears to derive from more than one parallel source. It is generally thought to originate from the poem completed by Muhammad Akram in 1685 on the story of Shahid and Wafa. Coomaraswamy, on the other hand, suggests that it could illustrate the story of Mohna Rani and Chel Batao (Coomaraswamy (1930), no.CXVI, pl.LI).
