A girl suckling a baby
- Scope & Content:
-
A girl suckling a baby.
Rajasthan, c.1640-50.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with inner yellow border decorated with gold and silver arabesques, the outer margin with lotus buds.
146 by 87 mm; page 315 by 215 mm.
Reverse: a floral trellis design.
The girl stands beneath a little tree, with the baby sitting on the knee of her right leg which is placed on a stool; an attendant girl faces her. There is a dark green background with blue and white sky above.
Note: The style of this and J.22, 10, is a free version of the court Mughal style of the second quarter of the seventeenth century. Compare for instance the latter with some of the female portraits of the Dara Shikoh Album (Add.Or.3129). These two pictures are a little later in date and would have been executed away from the Mughal court, perhaps at Bikaner.
