Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with orange border.
258 by 200 mm; page 299 by 230 mm.
Reverse: a quatrain written diagonally in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy on a brown background; 18th century.
A prince out hawking on horseback surprises four girls who are bathing at the bank of a river. Their purdah bullock cart with sleeping driver is waiting beyond a line of bushes and in the distant landscape are buildings and cattle.
Note: The style shows some Deccani features in the distant landscape, but Johnson Album 11 has definite Deccani associations, and it could be that the picture was mounted and repaired there.
