- Scope & Content:
-
A lady named Gul Safa.
By Anup Chattar, Mughal, c.1640.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘shabih-i gul safa. ma’shug-i dara shikoh’ (a likeness of Gul Safa, sweetheart of Dara Shikoh); below: ‘‘amal-i rai anup chattar dara shikohi’ (the work of Rai Anup Chattar [in the service of] Dara Shikoh); numbered 18 in Persian inventory note.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with a border of tulips and irises in gold on a plain ground; plain outer margin.
187 by 103 mm; page 371 by 250 mm.
Reproduced: Stchoukine (1929), pl.XL1a; Hambly (1968), fig.15.
Gul Safa, facing right, is standing in a field holding up a pink flower in her left hand, dressed in a transparent costume over gold brocade trousers. The sky is green with gold and coloured clouds at the top.
Note: The inscriptions are written on the outer border of a backing paper which is later than the miniature and its gold-decorated borders. The indication is nevertheless that the artist Anup Chattar worked for Dara Shikoh.
