A Christian knight fighting with a Saracen foot-soldier.

Inscribed on reverse in Persian: ‘shah jalal al-din akbar -’ possibly an identification of a facing picture in an earlier album.
Gouache with gold; mounted (with J.14, 8b) on an album page with gold-decorated orange border and a margin of florets in colours and gold.
109 by 134 mm; page 362 by 232 mm.
The knight with a crucifix on his breast-plate, rides a white stallion. The Saracen dressed in yellow uses an enormous black shield. The horizon is hilly and the sky cloud-streaked.
Note: A picture of two Saracens fighting with large shields is on the border of folio 20a of the Jahangir Album in Berlin (Kuhnel and Goetz (1924), pls 18 and 22).
