Drawing with gold; fragments of a floral border at top and bottom; on an album leaf with borders of marbled and blue paper; margin with simple green florets.
145 by 93 mm; page 351 by 232 mm.
Reverse: a quatrain in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy.
The Virgin Mary stands on a crescent moon holding the Christ Child in her arms, and a serpent entwined about the crescent; two angels fly above bearing a crown, and two other angels attend the Virgin’s mantle on either side.
Note: Another Indian version of this image in the Sackler Gallery (S1990.57), which imitates the original cross-hatching in the engraving, is attributed to Prince Salim's studio 1599-1605 by G.A. Bailey (‘The Jesuits and the Grand Mogul: Renaissance Art at the Imperial Court of India’, Washington, 1998, p. 33, fig. 25).
