A lady visiting yoginis at night.
Style of Mir Kalan Khan, Lucknow, c.1780.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
An inscription above, probably an inventory note, has been obliterated.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with gold and oxidised silver borders; outer border of grey paper added.
278 by 194 mm; page 443 by 295 mm.
A lady and her maids visit three yoginis at night in a forest; the lady is dressed in a blue bodice and costume of gold and colours. Her maids gather close behind her on the left, and the three yoginis are seated on the right, one playing a musical instrument, the other two falling asleep; in the centre burns a fire. There are bushes in the foreground and dense trees above.
Note: This and J.9, 16 and J.15, 10, are clearly derived from Deccani originals of the same type as the model for Mir Kalan Khan’s picture of the lady killing a snake, J.15, 8.
