Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with borders of gold arabesques; paper extensions at top and bottom.
264 by 175 mm; page 335 by 216 mm.
Reverse: a Persian quatrain written diagonally in ‘nasta'liq’ calligraphy; signed: ‘'abd al-rahim al-haravi’ and dated AH1006/AD1597-98.

A European gentleman wearing a Portuguese-style hat is seated in a classical chair reading from a book, held by an attendant before him, the book inscribed with pseudo-European characters. A white cat sits beside the chair. In the foreground two servants, also in European costume, prepare refreshments using elaborate blue and white vessels of European design.
Note: This is one of a small group of European-influenced pictures, perhaps all by the same artist, of which another is illustrated in Martin (1912), II, pl.171; Welch (1959), fig.14; Sotheby, 12 December 1972, lot 21.
