A young girl.
By Gobind Singh, Lucknow, c.1775-80.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed beneath in Persian: ‘‘amal-i rao gobind singh’ (the work of Rao Gobind Singh); a Persian inscription above identifies the girl as ‘Bhai Saras Rup’; numbered 26 in Persian inventory note; repeated on reverse naming the subject as Saras Rup Bhai.
Gouache with gold; mounted with gilt-sprinkled border.
144 by 96 mm; page 250 by 174 mm.
Reproduced: Smith (1911), pl.CXXVII; Smith (1930), pl.163.
A beautiful young girl sits among wine-red cushions on a terrace, holding a pink flower in her right hand. A ‘pan’ box and a spittoon are near her and a line of flowers are beyond the terrace wall beneath a streaked coloured sky.
Note: Gobind Singh here adopts a somewhat hard angular style with strident colours, which links him with the Mughal artist Aqil Khan. He also works in a less finished style when painting pictures for inclusion in some of Johnson’s series, notably the ‘ragamala,’ Johnson Album 42, and the ‘‘Iyar-i Danish’ illustrations of Album 54. J.51, 1 is also in his less finished style.
