Edmund Sheffield, first Earl of Mulgrave (1564?-1646) is shown half-length with one arm on his hip, set in a cartouche with the Latin legend: ‘Nobilissimus D. ‘Note:’ Edmund Sheffield, first Earl of Mulgrave, was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Yorkshire in 1603. He interested himself in colonisation, especially of North America. The engraving may well have been taken to India by an Englishman.
