Inscribed on picture in Persian: ‘‘amal-i ilias bahadur ibn madu’ (the work of Ilias Bahadur, son of Madu); on reverse:’ tasvir-i shah jahan’ (a picture of Shah Jahan).
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with inner border of marbled paper and outer border of floral trellis pattern in colours and gold.
188 by 112 mm; page 361 by 233 mm.
Reverse: blue paper borders enclosing a blind panel.
Islam Khan Rumi, facing right, stands in a flowery field wearing a purple jama with gold-decorated trousers and ‘patka’. He holds a straight sword and has a ‘talwar’ girt at his side. The background is a green sky.
Note: The artist Ilias Bahadur is perhaps the same as the Ilias Khan who signed a miniature now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, referred to in Kuhnel ((1937), no.10). A similar portrait in the Binney Collection (Binney (1973), no.61) is also ascribed to Ilias Bahadur.
