Nawab Buzurg Umed Khan
- Scope & Content:

Nawab Buzurg Umed Khan (d.1694).
Mughal, c.1700.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed beneath in Persian: ‘Buzurg Umed Khan’; numbered 19 in Persian inventory note; on reverse: ‘nawab buzurg umed’ ‘khan, ‘amal-i fath chand’ (Nawab Buzurg Umed Khan, the work of Fath Chand), numbered ‘15’ and ‘23.’
Tinted drawing with gold; on an album page with two borders of gold arabesques and an outer margin of gold flowers on blue paper; the miniature has been reset, the outer margin originating from the same album as J.22, 2.
155 by 88 mm; page 338 by 234 mm.
Nawab Buzurg Umed Khan, facing left, stands in a field, his hands folded over the hilt of his ‘talwar’, and his jama decorated with leaf-motifs.
Note: Buzurg Umed Khan, son of Shayistah Khan, governor successively of Allahabad and Bihar under Aurangzeb, died in 1694 (Shah Nawaz Khan (1911-52), I, 428). While the identification is probably correct, the attribution to the artist Fath Chand is apparently unfounded.
