Inscribed on reverse in Persian: ‘padshah akbar’ (the emperor Akbar), which may have referred to an adjacent picture in the original album.
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf; two ‘misra‘‘ in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy mounted above and below the miniature; gold-decorated orange inner border; outer margin with flower-heads in colours and gold.
172 by 106 mm; page 360 by 229 mm.
Reverse: plain with a blind panel.
A poet, perhaps Hafiz, is seated on a carpeted plinth beneath a tree while a youth dressed in orange kneels before him reading from a book. A cat and a gold ewer are in the foreground, an egret and smaller birds in the tree above.
