Yogis sleeping

Yogis sleeping.
Mughal, c.1770.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed in Persian: ‘‘amal-i mas‘ud, sunnah 130’ (the work of Masud, year 130 - perhaps intended as AH1013/AD1604-1605 or AH1030/AD1620-21); on reverse: ‘jalsah-i fuqara-i jalali’ (gathering of illustrious ascetics).
Tinted drawing with gold; on an album leaf with a border of marbled paper and a margin of leaf-pattern in blue and gold.
199 by 143 mm; page 361 by 237 mm.
Reverse: an undecorated blue panel.
Three yogis and their dog are asleep beneath a banyan tree, as a fourth figure approaches over the horizon. There is a shrine on a hilltop on the left.
Note: This is a later version of J.22, 15, where the banyan tree is almost identical. The inscription is not reliable, the same attribution having been added to J.22, 15 and 16.
