- Scope & Content:

A shepherd offering a flower to a holy man.
Attributed to Basawan, Mughal, c.1585-90.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Drawing; on an album page with marbled and gilt decorated borders; two ‘baits’ in ‘nasta'liq’ script above and below.
185 by 127 mm; page 360 by 234 mm.
Reproduced: Ashton (1950), no.746, pl.137; Welch (1976), no.9; Losty (1986), 24.
The holy man walks with a rude staff followed by his accolyte who leads a dog and carries a gourd for victuals. The shepherd, as scantly dressed as the holy men, profers a flower, his flock clustered in the foreground. Two boys climb a tree in the background.
Note: The attribution to Basawan has been made by Welch (‘op. cit.),’ who points out the interest taken by this artist in eccentricities, and the characteristic treatment of the tree in the background.
