A party of Kanphat yogis resting round a fire
- Scope & Content:
-
A party of kanphat yogis.
Mughal, c.1700.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed in left foreground in Persian: ‘‘amal-i mas‘ud’.’ sunnah 101’2 (the work of Masud, year AH1012/AD1603-1604); on reverse: ‘majlis-i kanphatha’ (an assembly of ‘kanphats).’
Tinted drawing with gold; on an album leaf with inner border of marbled paper and an outer border of leaf-motifs in blue and gold.
224 by 130 mm; page 361 by 240 mm.
The yogis rest around a fire before a banyan tree, one with his hand on an upturned pot, another standing on the left with a fan decorated in colours and gold. A dog is in the foreground and a shrine on the hill behind.
Note: The inscription, although pointing to an early seventeenth-century date, is spurious. ‘See’ J.22, 12 and 16, which bear almost identical attributions.
