Four Kanphat yogis in a landscape
- Scope & Content:

Four kanphat yogis in a landscape.
Mughal, c.1610-20.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed on rock in foreground in Persian: ‘‘amal-i mas’ud, sunnah 103’ (the work of Mas’ud, year 103 - meaning AH1003/AD1594-95); on reverse: ‘tasvir-i kanphatha’ (a picture of ‘kanphats).’
Tinted drawing with some gouache; on an album leaf with borders of marbled paper and gold arabesques.
254 by 179 mm; page 361 by 234 mm.
Reverse: blind panel.
Two young ‘kanphat’ yogis return to their leader who sits on a rock beside a fire. An accolyte is also seated behind a tree on the left. A stream flows from rocks, and a town is in the distance.
Note: The inscription attributing the drawing to Mas’ud is spurious; the date is ambiguous, and although perhaps intended for AH1003 or 1013 it is incompatible with the style of the drawing. The unreliability of the inscription is further endorsed by the presence of similar attributions in the same hand on J.14,5; J.22,12; and J.22,15. J.22,12, is clearly a later picture, with the inscription incorporated as a contemporary signature.
