Bahadur Shah I (1707-12).
By Hunhar, Lucknow, c.1760.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed above in Persian: ‘tasvir-i bahadur shah badshah, ‘amal-i hunhar hal’ (a picture of the emperor Bahadur Shah, the work of the present Hunhar); numbered 59 in Persian inventory note; on reverse: ‘tasvir-i mu‘izz al-din ‘amal-i javahir mal’ (a picture of Mu‘izz al-Din, the work of Jawahir Mal); a line has been drawn through this inscription, presumably because of its inaccuracy; the picture is attributed to Hunhar in the other inscription, and the title of Bahadur Shah was Mu‘azzim rather than Mu‘izz al-Din.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with inner gold border and plain margin.
252 by 157 mm; page 331 by 222 mm.
Bahadur Shah I, facing right, stands in a field, holding a ‘sarpesh’ in his left hand and a straight sword in his right. He is dressed predominantly in white, with yellow boots and a halo, background of blue sky.
Note: The inscription indicates that Hunhar was known as the ‘present’ Hunhar to distinguish him from his seventeenth-century namesake.
