An officer in consultation.
Murshidabad, c.1770.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Numbered 64 in Persian inventory note.
Gouache with gold; applied border of grey paper.
288 by 206 mm; page 325 by 225 mm.
Reverse: main outlines of the picture roughly traced.
An officer, probably a nawab of Murshidabad, sits beneath a canopy on a terrace attended by six courtiers and ministers, all dressed in white; there is a formal garden beyond with a lotus pool, under a moonlit sky.
Note: This picture shows many Murshidabad features: pale colouring, the yellow and white flowers around the pool, the arrangement of the figures in relation to the canopy, but some of the facial features suggest Lucknow influence. This would be in accordance with the proposition that Lucknow artists went to Murshidabad about 1760 (Skelton (1959), 16-17). The nawab could be Mir Qasim Khan, although he is not wearing the same style of plumed turban as in the Victoria and Albert Museum picture (illustrated in Skelton (1956), fig.10).
