Inscribed above in Persian: ‘raja bhao singh’; Persian inventory note (not numbered).
Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with borders of fawn and pale blue paper.
118 by 64 mm; page 328 by 224 mm.
Reverse: three ‘baits’ of a ‘ghazal’ written in ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy; signed by Nur Allah al -Husaini; 17th century.

Bhao Singh stands looking to the right, his hands folded across his waist, dressed in a six-point jama over purple trousers, and a speckled blue turban; green background.
Note: For another portrait of Bhao Singh, see the Victoria and Albert Museum Jahangir durbar (Stchoukine (1929-30), 216; Stchoukine (1929), pl.XXVIII). A portrait of the same prince in the same attitude and costume in the Khalili Collection, London (Khalili catalogue, vol. VIII, no. 24) was possibly done for Shah Salim at Allahabad 1600-05 and would be the original on which our Amber version is based.
