Inscribed beneath in Persian: ‘‘amal-i rai chitarman’ (the work of Rai Chitarman); numbered 60 in Persian inventory note (partly repeated on a slip of paper pasted to the top of the border); on reverse: ‘dara shikoh, ‘amal-i anup chattar’ (Dara Shikoh, the work of Anup Chattar); another inscription has been erased.
Gouache with gold; oval; on an album page with ruled and sprinkled borders.

The prince, facing left, is seen head and shoulders, his jama decorated in monochrome with flowers, and his turban in gold and colours with a single black aigrette; green background.
Note: The quality of this portrait points to a seventeenth-century date, but the album page and its inscriptions are eighteenth century. The presence of two attributions is curious, but the technique of the portrait is compatible with other works by Chitarman, ‘see’ Beach (1978), no.37.
