Inscribed above in Persian: ‘tasvir-i asad khan hangam-i javani’ (portrait of Asad Khan in the time of his youth); numbered 3 in Persian inventory note; on reverse in nagari:’ Asad Khan.’

Asad Khan, facing left, stands holding a letter-bag on his right hand, with his left hand resting on the hilt of his ‘talwar.’
‘Note:’ Asad Khan Asaf al-Daula Jamla al-Mulk had as a boy been a favourite of Shah Jahan, and became Grand Vizier under Aurangzeb. He was a kind and sympathetic character who, after many achievements, died in AH1129/AD1717 at the age of ninety-four lunar years (Shah Nawaz Khan (1911-52), I, 270).
