Ruh Allah Khan. Artist(s): Chhat Mal (c.1690)
- Scope & Content:
-
Ruh Allah Khan (d.1692).
Attributed to Chhat Mal.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Inscribed beneath in Persian: ‘navab ruh allah khan,‘amal-i chhat mal’ (Nawab Ruh Allah Khan, the work of Chhat Mal); numbered 38 in Persian inventory note. This and J.1, 15 and J.23, 4, all have similar attributions written on the border or reverse, and although the name in each case is spelt differently, it seems that the inscriptions are intended to allude to the same artist. From a stylistic point of view the portraits could well be the work of one man.
Gouache with gold; on an album page with plain and gold-decorated borders.
204 by 123 mm; page 322 by 203 mm.
Reverse: a page of ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy written on a marbled background; 17th century.
Ruh Allah Khan, facing right, stands among flowers holding a paper in his left hand. He is richly dressed in a striped green jama and floral coat. The background is plain with coloured sky at the top.
Note: Ruh Allah Khan held the office of Mir Bakhshi under Aurangzeb, and died in AH1103/AD1692 (Shah Nawaz Khan (1911-52), II, 611).
